John: John D. Burke was appointed by Govenor
Thompson to assume the duties of Register of Deeds on July 6,1999.
Previous to his appointment John was in the banking business for 30
plus years. John is a native of Monroe County and lives in Sparta
with his wife Bev. They have two grown children; Paul & Amy. John is
ivolved with the Boy Scouts ,Boys & Girls Club,Ducks Unlimited and
Ushers at his church. In his spare time ,John enjoys houseboating
,fishing ,hunting,biking,cross-country skiing and woodworking. |

| About the Register of Deeds office: We have three(3) full time people in the office and one 1/2 time person. Office hours are ; 8:00 to 4:30 Monday -Friday. |

| About Monroe County: On March 21,1854 ,by an act of the legislature, Monroe County came into being with Sparta as county seat, after previously being a part of Crawford County and then La Crosse County. Today Monroe County covers an area of 908 square miles and has an approximate population of 42,000 people. The county is blessed with may scenic hills and valleys.Sparta , the Bicycling Capital of America ,hosts the northern end of the nationally famous Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail,and the eastern end of the La Crosse River State Bike Trail. |
