About Joan:  Joan Hansen was elected for the term that began in 1999. Prior to her election she was the Deputy Register of Deeds for two years. Before working for Vilas County, Joan was office manager of AmeriGas Company in Eagle River for 17 years. Joan is a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where she serves as Financial Secretary, newsletter editor, and a part-time secretary on weekends. She is also a member of the Vilas County Republican Party. Joan is married to Michael Hansen and they have one grown son and a new granddaughter in October of 2004. Joan enjoys computers and venturing on the internet, volunteering at church, being a homebody with her husband, and most of all enjoys being a grandparent.

About the Register of Deeds office The Vilas County Register of Deeds has a staff of three full time people. Until recently, the office typically recorded about 10,000 real estate documents a year, but in 2003 that number spiked up to an all time high of 18,198. A computerized tract index was installed in 1996. Vilas was one of the first counties to establish a system to microfilm documents in 1975, and a computerized document imaging system began in 2001.

About Vilas County:  Winter is big in Vilas County, the "Snowmobile Capital of the World," with its annual snowmobile races and also Klondike Days featuring dog sled racing and a Rendezvous Encampment.
