Joan:
Joan Hansen was elected Register of Deeds in 1999. Prior to her
election she was the Deputy Register of Deeds for two years. Joan is
married to Michael Hansen and they have one grown son and a new
granddaughter in October of 2004. Joan is a member of the Vilas
County Republican Party. She is a member of Prince of Peace
Lutheran Church, serving as Financial Secretary, newsletter editor,
and a part-time secretary on weekends. Joan enjoys computers, being
a homebody with her husband, and most of all enjoys being a
grandparent. |

| About the Register of Deeds office: The Vilas County Register of Deeds has a full time Deputy, a Lead Document Technician and a Document Technician in addition to herself. The Register of Deeds implemented a computerized tract index in 1996 and digital imaging system in 2001. Images of all recordings are in hard copy (paper) form from 1893-1975, microfilm images from 1975-2001, and digital computerized images from 2001 to the current. We are currently working to back-scan microfilm images to digital records to provide efficient access. Due to many summer cottages on the many lakes, Vilas has over 43,000 tax parcels and a large tourism influx in the summer. Vilas has recently made the tax assessment information available on the county website. |

| About Vilas County: Winter is big in Vilas County, the "Snowmobile Capital of the World," with its annual snowmobile races and also Klondike Days featuring dog sled racing and a Rendezvous Encampment. In the summer and fall, local activities, festivals and bike trails near the county’s 1300 lakes and 73 rivers and streams attract many visitors.
